If you suffer from migraines, jaw pain, and other TMJ symptoms, you’re probably excited to finally get relief from your debilitating pain. Your TMJ dental appliance, also called your Natural Fit Orthotic, can give you the much-needed relief and healing from jaw tiredness, soreness, and painful migraines.
But after your Orthotic Insertion appointment, you probably will have some questions about how to care and wear your TMJ orthotic. We try our best to thoroughly explain how to wear and maintain it with you in person, but it’s also good to keep this guide for reference.
I also hope this shows migraine and TMJ sufferers looking for treatment that this is a non-invasive, non-surgical way to heal pain.
What Your Natural Fit Orthotic Does and the Benefits of Taking Care of It
A dental appliance is a prophylactic migraine treatment. It’s an important part of pain management for migraine and TMJ sufferers.
Your Natural Fit Orthotic, also known as your TMJ dental appliance, will be fitted and balanced to your mouth and your bite to begin your therapeutic stage of treatment.
- It reduces the strain on the jaw joints, head, and neck muscles caused from a misaligned bite.
- Your Natural Fit Orthotic also relieves teeth clenching and grinding.
- It can also eliminate joint and muscle strain and soreness.
Because this is such an important part of your healing, you want to make sure it stays in good working order always.
Migraine and TMJ sufferers need to wear their TMJ dental appliance every single day. In some cases, I’ll tell patients in my Calgary dentist office that they need to wear their appliance 24/7 until their jaw heals and the joints are re-aligned to their optimal position.
As you heal, we will re-adjust your dental appliance.
How to Take Care of Your Appliance – Tips from Your Calgary Dentist
Here are some wear and care tips for my Calgary TMJ patients.
Put these into practice and your appliance will last for years and could save you time from coming in for a re-fitting.
Cleaning and Care Tips – What You Need to Do to Make Your Appliance Last Longer
- Generally, the easiest way to clean your Natural Fit Orthotic is to use a non abrasive polident tablet and a denture brush.
- Brushing it with a toothbrush and some toothpaste every time you take it out of your mouth may suffice but it’s easy to leave out crevices in your orthotic.
- Don’t use any products with alcohol (like mouth rinse) or bleach, as these can cause the material to break down.
- Avoid boiling your splint or putting it in hot water. If you want to soak it, put it in hydrogen peroxide for three to five minutes.
- Remember to bring you Natural Fit Orthotic at your regular hygiene appointments for a deep cleaning in our office’s ultrasonic cleaning unit.

Wearing Tips – The Best Way to Use Your TMJ Dental Appliance
For recently diagnosed TMJ patients, the idea of wearing their dental appliance may seem cumbersome. But within a relatively short amount of time, you’ll get used to wearing your Natural Fit Orthotic.
Spot the difference? A more relaxed bite vs a tense, misaligned bite makes the biggest difference in terms of posture, headaches, migraines, jaw pain, and everything in between. tmjcalgary.com . . . . . #tmj #tmjcalgary #tmd #occlusion #occlusiontherapy #betterbite #yycwellness #tmjdisorder #migraines #headaches #jawpain #calgary #yycdentist #migrainessuck #recoverywarrior #yychealth #dentistry #misalignment #healing #migraineswarrior #yyc #downtownyyc #iamdowntown
If you’re told you need to wear the splint 24/7 for a while, trying to talk might seem frustrating. The key here is practice. Just keep talking with your splint and before you know it, talking will be easier (along with the erasure of your migraines and TMJ symptoms).
Wearing something in your mouth might make you want to clench down on it at first. Try to be aware when you’re doing this – and then stop right away. Clenching can lead to muscle spasms.
Many Calgary TMJ patients have found that they end up taking their appliance out in the middle of the night.
That’s okay – you’re just not used to it yet. Soon, you’ll wear the appliance all night long without any issues.
This is hugely important for those that clench and grind their teeth while they sleep. Wearing their Natural Fit Orthotic at night is integral part of their healing.
Always Remember Your Migraine and Treatment Goals When Caring and Wearing for Your Appliance
When you keep your treatment goals in mind, it’ll give you the push you need to spend a few extra minutes each day caring for yourself and your appliance.
Keeping your appliance in good working order and wearing it as directed will help you heal and get your life back.
